samenvatting: Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender individuals of color, the largest demographic in the (HBC), are amongst the group at highest risk for HIV infection in the United States. The HBC have limited access to culturally appropriate HIV education. This study aimed to develop a partnership with HBC leaders to uncover strategies for increasing HIV prevention knowledge, including participation in HIV vaccine trials. To this end a research institution-community-HBC partnership was established. In-depth qualitative and quantitative data were collected from the 14 HBC leaders in Western New York, revealing that knowledge of HIV and related vaccine trials was limited. Barriers to increasing HIV knowledge included fear of peer judgment, having inaccurate information about HIV, and lack of education. Among the HBC, community partnerships will further aid in the development of future HIV prevention programs and increase individuals? willingness to participate in future HIV vaccine trials. samenvatting: Studies involving the House Ball Community (HBC) have found high rates of HIV prevalence and undiagnosed HIV infection, as well as unique social and sexual network-related HIV risk and protective behaviors (Murrill et al., 2008; Sanchez, Finlayson, Murrill, Guilin, & Dean, 2010). Efforts to understand culturally appropriate and effective methods of HIV prevention services within the relatively understudied HBC are scarce (Phillips, Peterson, Binson, Hidalgo, & Magnus, 2011). This qualitative study, utilizing a diffusion of innovation theoretical framework, aimed to explore social norms regarding HIV and accessibility of HIV prevention services within the HBC. Thirty-seven participants (16 community leaders and 21 youths) engaged in focus group discussions. Participants discussed the perceptions of HIV and stigmatization within the HBC, general and HBC-specific risk factors for HIV transmission, as well as HIV prevention needs and strategies for culturally appropriate HIV interventions. Findings from this qualitative study highlight both the vulnerability of the HBC to HIV transmission and the corresponding support for HIV prevention interventions. samenvatting: For over a decade, attending events featuring drag king performances - a subcultural phenomenon where women consciously perform masculinity - proved a popular pastime in Sydney, Australia. Established within a broader tradition of live performance culture but also part of a wider urban night-time economy catering to lesbian patrons, Sydney's drag king scene sustained a range of activities and interactions that took place in the vicinity of the performances on stage. In this article, I draw on data collated from a series of group discussions with scene participants, alongside my own immersive form of participation over a sustained five-year period, to review the role of affect within the drag king scene. Combining Lauren Berlant's account of queer intimacies with Kathleen Stewart's rendering of atmospheric attunement, I consider how the act of being together engenders an intimate attunement of the everyday potentialities of the scene.

samenvatting: This project examines butch and crossdresser communities in Northern Europe in the late 20th century, and their transformation into the non-binary movement of the last ten years. This research investigates the recent trajectory of gender-diverse communities and evaluates the role of the non-binary moment in the history of gender-diverse people in the Western world. Findings come from interviews with Dutch individuals who identify as non-binary, genderqueer, or otherwise outside of the gender binary, as well as periodicals and other materials related to crossdresser and butch identities from the IHLIA LGBT Heritage Archives and the Atria Institute. This study demonstrates that the non-binary movement represents a significant shift in communities of gender variance and an opening for gender liberation. While butch and crossdresser communities transgress binaries in important ways, the non-binary identity allows gender-diverse people in the Western world, for the first time in centuries, to have the freedom to imagine their identities beyond the categories of male and female.

samenvatting: Jojo came into my life when I threw the One More Time ball in October of 2013, an evening dedicated to septuagenarian drag legends who wanted to come out looking glamorous after more than thirty years out of the spotlight. While I was busy making arrangements in the background for the evening, scurrying around in my thrift store dyeable heels and brocade skirt suit, she caught me by the arm, pulled me to her side, and told me that, especially for me, she was singing "My Funny Valentine." Jojo was the last living member of the Pearl Box Revue, a 1970s stage show managed by Lucky LaBaker and Bobby Lopez out of Buffalo, New York. We became fast friends. I was her captive audience, with her teaching me when I do and don't look glamorous, giving advice on the finer points of pleasure that come with removable dentures..

samenvatting: Cousin Robert was part of the Castro drag scene for seven decades before he died in 2019 at age ninety. He was born in the city and was a regular at Twin Peaks, back when the windows were covered up to protect from vice raids and angry locals. He lived way up on 17th Street, and I wonder how he managed to climb that steep hill in strappy heels. Robert told me that he always passed, so he didn't need to change out of his look before leaving the bar. As the only other queer in our biological family, I inherited his photo album when he died. These photos connect me to a legacy of San Francisco queer life before AIDS, ghosts smiling from blurry photos of the performance stage at Finocchios. samenvatting: The transvestite identity is created on the margins of imperialist bourgeois society, in the nonpayment of narratives (and consumptions) naturalizing the sex-gender system. For this reason, the transvestite carries the social punishment of turning her identity into her work. In the transvestite we find the radicality of our trans genealogy, the half diaries of the bastard daughters of the night. The transvestite life is a life of community tenderness, in which new ways of reproducing life flourish - of lives marked by the system as surpluses - beyond the heteronormative nuclear family. Such care springs from the precariousness and loneliness that history etches on the skin of those who distance themselves from inflicted masculinity, belonging to the dispossessed class. Today the wounds of the transvestite body are named as parody. I speak here with the transvestite Samantha Hudson, an emerging singer, performer, and artist in the underground transvestite scene in Spain, about the trans-exclusionary.
